4. Call roadside assistance: Give the roadside assistance team a call. If you are a member, you can usually log in to their app or find how to contact them via their website. A handy tip is to save your breakdown rescue company into your phone as a contact.

What should you be looking for when buying a second hand car? Avoid costly mistakes when buying your next vehicle with our used car checklist.

The used car market is booming. Prices have risen as manufacturers struggle to source the parts to build new cars. As such, it’s no longer a buyer’s market, which means it is more important than ever to refer to our used car checklist to avoid stress, disappointment and wasted money.

1. Ensure that the trader you’re purchasing from is trustworthy. Choose a business that is part of a trade association as they will need to abide by a code of practice to remain a member.

2. Check the car’s history. Simple checks will ascertain whether the used car you’re interested in is being sold illegally, doesn’t match official records or has had major repairs that could compromise its safety. You will also be able to discover if the current owner still owes money on the car. Ask for the registration number, mileage, MOT test number, make and model. The DVLA has a free online checker so you can make sure that all details match. Alternatively, a private history check (which costs around £20) will be able to tell you whether the vehicle has been reported stolen, if the seller still owes money, if the car has been involved in a serious collision, what the mileage should be and whether the vehicle has previously been written off, repaired and then returned to the road.

3. Look for any gaps. Gaps in the vehicle’s MOT or service history can indicate issues. Cars over three years old should have an annul MOT; cars that have not been regularly serviced are far more prone to breakdowns and costly repairs than vehicles have been well maintained.

4. Inspect the car. Always view a car in daylight so you are able to spot any damage. If you aren’t particularly confident when it comes to checking for faults, you have every right to take a knowledgable friend, family member or even a mechanic with you when looking at a car.

5. Take the car on a test drive. It is important to try before you buy – we recommend at least 15 minutes on different types of roads, such as A roads and smaller lanes. However it is also essential that you are insured to do so. Check with your insurance provider that you can legally drive someone else’s vehicle. If not, you may be covered on the trade or private seller’s insurance but you will need to double check beforehand.

When choosing spare vehicle parts, what are your options?

Like it or not, at some point your vehicle will need to be repaired. Wear and tear happens – and inevitably this means time spent in the garage and ordering spare parts. However, when it comes to replacement parts, you have options.

Here at M&BM Motors, we offer customers the choice of genuine dealership parts or pattern parts, designed to suit any budget. But the question is – what are pattern part and how do they differ from genuine parts?

Genuine parts

Genuine spare parts are just that – the parts your vehicle is fitted with. Also known as Original Equipment (OE), they will come in a car manufacturer branded box and are generally known as the safest option as you can guarantee that they will fit your car. They will also ensure that your vehicle’s warranty remains valid. However, they are also usually the most expensive choice.

Pattern parts

Also known as aftermarket or replacement parts, pattern parts are called as such because they are manufactured using the pattern (template) designed by the manufacturer.

Costs vary but as a rule, pattern parts are cheaper than genuine (OE) parts, making them a highly attractive choice for older cars.

Unfortunately, the quality of pattern parts can differ quite considerably. Many can actually outperform genuine spare parts – certain high end firms will actually analyse OE parts to work out why they fail and then improve on the original design. However, some pattern parts might be made using substandard materials, or may be so badly made that your mechanic will have to adapt them in order to successfully fit them to your car. Therefore, even though the pattern part is cheaper in the short term, they could be prove to be a false economy. The may wear out so quickly that you end up having to replace them far earlier than if you’d gone for genuine parts.

Are you and your car prepared for the darker nights?

We’re halfway through October and we’ll be enjoying an extra hour in bed soon. The clocks go back at 2am on October 27th 2019, signalling the end of British Summer Time (BST) and the UK will revert back to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

Inevitably, once the clocks go back, the evenings will get darker. And although no-one is going to complain about being able to have a lie-in, there are campaigners that do not agree with our current practice. They would prefer for British time to be brought in line with other European countries, which would mean we would be an hour ahead of GMT during the winter months and two hours ahead in the summer.

Nick Lloyd, road safety manager for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents commented: “The clocks going back is a pivotal point in the year for road users, particularly cyclists and pedestrians, as there is less daylight in the evening at a time when with the weather is worsening.

“The statistics are clear – accidents and injuries can be reduced if we move to Single/Double Summer Time, and that is why RoSPA is urging the Government to take a fresh look at this issue and help save lives.”

This is unlikely to happen anytime soon; therefore it is important to remember that driving conditions are set to change once the clocks go back. The mornings will be lighter but the evenings darker. Night-time driving conditions are markedly different and more risky in comparison to driving during the day – statistics show that 40% collisions happen after dark.

This is because potential hazards are more difficult to see at night, including pedestrians and cyclists. Your eyes have to work harder than in the day, leading to tiredness and potentially slower reactions.

At night it is far more difficult to judge speed and distance, meaning that objects might look closer than they really are.

In addition, your body naturally starts to prepare itself for sleep at night. As it gets later, you may suddenly feel tired, often with very little warning.

And of course, it’s not just you on the road – other drivers may also be feeling the effects of night-time driving. Sadly, some may also be under the influence of drink or drugs, so it is incredibly important to stay vigilant and alert.

How to ensure you’re night-time driving ready

The most obvious way to minimise the chance of being in a collision is to avoid driving at night altogether. Although it is not possible for everyone, you can reduce the amount of night-time driving you do by staying in, walking (safely) or using public transport.

It is imperative that you stay vigilant when driving at night. Study the road ahead for oncoming drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

If you are concerned that you are getting tired, or planning on driving a long distance in the evening, ensure you plan a break every two hours.

Inexperienced or nervous driver? Why not book a refresher lesson at dusk with a driving instructor? You will gain more confidence and new skills specific to driving in the dark.

Of course, it doesn’t matter how prepared you are for night driving if your vehicle is not. A few simple checks can make all the difference:

Lights

If your front and rear lights aren’t working correctly, you are driving illegally. Check your lights to ensure they are clean and functioning correctly. Drive using your full beams unless there are other vehicles, in which case you need to dip them until they have passed. It is very easy to be dazzled by headlights so try to focus your gaze on the left hand kerb.

In addition, you should turn your lights on before the sun sets in the evening and leave them on for at least an hour after sun rise, as twilight and dawn can be tricky when it comes to visibility.

Windscreen

Dirty windscreens are more likely to steam up; you may also notice increased glare from other cars’ lights. Therefore, although it is important to keep your windscreen clean any time of year, it is even more essential once the clocks go back.

Windscreen wiper

Worn wipers won’t clean; they will just smear any moisture on the windscreen.

There is nothing worse than worn wipers that simply smear rather than clean. And this can be incredibly dangerous when driving at night. It’s essential that you replace worn windscreen wipers as soon as possible.

Speed

It is tempting to slow down when faced with oncoming traffic, then speeding up again once the vehicles have passed. However, this fluctuation in speed can be confusing to drivers behind you as it is more difficult to judge speed in the dark. Try to stay at a steady speed.

Long distance journeys or just around the corner...

Christmas is almost upon us and whilst we are looking forward to the arrival of the big man in the warm, red suit, watching festive specials, eating our own bodyweight and (hopefully) forgetting about work for a few days, this time of year can also mean a lot of time spent in the car.

Whether you are visiting faraway friends and family, suited and booted for your Christmas works do or on your way to your New Year’s Eve venue, it is important to stay safe in your vehicle during the colder months.

Here are M&BM’s top tips to stay safe in your vehicle this Christmas.

Christmas tipple

The most obvious point to make over the Christmas holiday is to be sensible when it comes to alcohol. It’s likely that you have been invited to more parties this month than any other time of the year, and we’re willing to bet that alcohol features in all of them.

If you are planning on drinking, don’t drive. Walk if you live close by, get a lift with someone who is abstaining or book a taxi. Saving a few pennies is simply not worth a driving ban or worse.

Steel yourself for the masses

The news is warning us about the state of the roads this coming weekend. In the lead-up to Christmas, the roads close to town centres and retail parks have become nightmarish; soon the shopping will be over and the motorways will be clogged with people travelling to visit family.

Are you one of them? If so, make sure you’re prepared in case of a traffic jam:

If you are going on a long journey, check the traffic news. You may be able to avoid congested areas or set off at a different time to minimise the chance of ending up stuck
Fill up the car – the last thing you want is to be at a total standstill with just fumes in the tank

Ensure your car has the fluid it needs – oil, antifreeze, screenwash etc
Leave home with an empty bladder – it’s pretty obvious why!
Take snacks – you don’t want to get ‘hangry’ when stuck in traffic!
Bring a book – if you’re going nowhere, you may as well turn what could be an annoying situation into a rare chance to relax!
Don’t forget your phone and charger – make sure people know where you are

Prepare for winter

When it comes to Christmas and New Year, the weather can really be all over the place. Mild but wet, freezing cold, gale force winds… are you and your vehicle prepared for whatever the British weather throws at you?

Check the weather forecast and work out the safest route
Allow extra journey time so you don’t have to rush in adverse weather conditions
Check the battery – the cold weather and increased use of lights and heating can place strain on your car’s battery
Clean your lights – you will be relying on your lights in the dark or when driving in weather conditions that result in poor visibility so it is vital that they are clean
Check your tyre pressure and tread – decent tyres mean decent steering and braking, which are essential in cold and icy temperatures
Ensure your windscreen wipers are in good condition and your wash has been topped up
Have a breakdown kit in the boot – this should include a torch, blanket, scraper and de-icer, a shovel and snacks. You will also want to make sure your mobile is fully charged

Colder temperatures and darker evenings - is your car ready for the winter ahead!

October is here and with it comes falling leaves, colder temperatures and darker evenings.

As the days draw in, you will not fail to notice a change in the way you’re driving. For example, low yet dazzling sunlight can make visibility an issue, which is you’re you’re probably using your car’s sun visor far more than you were just weeks ago.

So what else do you need to be aware of as we head into autumn?

Low sun

Now we’re not complaining for one moment about the sun still being out – long may it continue! However, glaring, low sunlight in the mornings and sunset can seriously impair visibility when driving. Therefore it is vital that you and your car are prepared.

Make use of your sun visor (or sunglasses if you’d prefer) and ensure that your vehicle’s windscreen is clean both inside and out and your windscreen washer fluid is topped up.

If the sun does suddenly dazzle you, gently slow down – don’t brake too quickly as other drivers who may also have been affected by the low sun may not be able to react as quickly as they normally would.

Be aware that if the sun is behind you as you’re driving, it’s likely that drivers coming the opposite way are being affected. Concentrate and stay on the lookout for any sudden issues as just because the sun isn’t directly impairing your vision, it doesn’t mean it’s not seriously impacting others.

Windscreen

Use this time to take a good, objective look at your windscreen – are there scratches and chips that could impair visibility in low yet bright sun? No-one wants to, but replacing the windscreen now will be far less costly and traumatic than the repercussions of an accident.

You will also want to gauge whether your windscreen wipers are up to the task. They only last two years – is now the time to buy some new ones?

Battery

Are you 100% sure your car’s battery is up to the task? The colder months mean your battery has to work harder than usual. Avoid buying someone else's banger

Opting to buy a used car can save you a lot of money. It's well documented that most new cars lose approximately 40% of their value in the first year alone! That's a lot of money you could be spending elsewhere!

Yet it is important to remember that there are certain risks when it comes to buying a second-hand car. After all, the last thing you want is to end up spending the money you'd supposedly saved on costly repairs! Here at M&BM Motors we have seen quite a few nightmare situations resulting from buyers not taking the right precautions when purchasing a used car, whether from a registered dealer or private seller.

So how can you determine whether the car you like is the amazing deal it seems? How can you avoid spending your hard-earned money on a banger that won't get you to the end of the road, let alone from A to B?

Here are M&BM Motors' top tips to avoid disaster when buying a used car:

Vehicle history check

When considering purchasing a used car, it is vital to remember that it has a history. And sadly, that history may be rather murky.

For example, if you don't take the necessary precautions you could end up with a used car that was registered stolen, has been previously written off or subject to a logbook loan agreement. In certain cases, your vehicle may have to be taken away for investigation or you may discover that you don't actually own the car at all!

For around £20, you can request a vehicle history check. Please be aware that there are lots of companies that offer this service but M&BM would recommend HPI as although it is one of the most expensive options, it offers the most comprehensive check available. Peace of mind for £20? You know it makes sense.

Check the market value

Don't get overcharged. If you've seen a car you like, do some research by comparing similar cars online to see how much they are priced at.

When it comes to viewing the used car, make sure you go in the daytime so you can clearly see any blemishes that may affect the value, such as dings, dents and scratches.

Ask to see the registration document and check the VIN

It is important to ask the seller to show you the vehicle's V5C registration document as this provides details of current and previous registered keepers. It will also contain the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), which you should then match with the VIN on the car itself.

This will be found stamped under the bonnet and at the base of the used car's windscreen.

Has the vehicle been clocked?

Have you seen a car that has incredibly low mileage for its age? Sometimes a deal that looks too good to be true is just that. You may find that the odometer has been wound back to make it look as if the mileage is far lower than it actually is.

Take a test drive

You're not going to know if the car is comfortable to drive (or listen out for any ominous noises) without taking the used car on a test drive. Allow yourself around 30 minutes and make sure you drive at different speeds, using the accelerator, brakes and gears to check how they handle.

However, before you take the car on a test drive, check that your insurance policy allows you to drive other vehicle's with the owner's permission – or you may end up in trouble if stopped by the authorities.

Use your head, not your heart

But it's so shiny! I love the colour! My friends are going to be so jealous?

Yes, many cars are built to look lovely and make you the envy of all around you. But try to remember that they also need to serve a very important purpose. And that is to get you and your passengers to your destination safely. So before you fall in love with the stunning trim, make sure you think of the practicalities.

For example, does this car suit your needs? Is it big enough? Will it accommodate your family? Does it have the boot space you need? If you spend lots of time on the road, is it comfortable and economical? Determine your needs before you start looking as these factors should be the basis of your search. No matter how pretty the car may be!

What are the advantages of air conditioning in your car

Is air conditioning a must in our climate...

The UK isn’t well known for its tropical heatwaves. We may enjoy relatively warm summers but the temperature gauge rarely gets close to 30 degrees.

So why bother with air conditioning?

Once upon a time air conditioning was regarded as a luxury rather than a necessity. Yet now the majority of new cars have air conditioning fitted as standard. A lot of this is down to people’s ever-increasing expectations – if you’re spending thousands on a new vehicle, you’re going to want as many mod cons as possible. And you may be surprised at just how many benefits air conditioning in your car provides.

A cooler, more comfortable driving experience

Yes it’s obvious, but with air conditioning you can reduce the temperature in your car without having to open the windows. Driving slowly through town with the windows down is fun but we don’t recommend trying it on a motorway. You’ll end up being buffeted about by what feels like gale force winds, and there’s no chance of hearing the radio or your passengers (although if you have children, this isn’t necessarily the worst thing!)

Better air condition

It’s called air conditioning because that’s exactly what it does – conditions the air. This means that excess moisture is removed from the air, which is exactly what you want on hot, muggy days.

De-misted windscreen

It is vital that you are able to see through your windscreen and other glass – a film of mist is going to seriously impair your vision. You can use the AC button to evaporate any moisture far quicker than it takes for your screen-heater to warm up.

This is particularly beneficial if you have a people carrier that is often filled with damp children (i.e. after football practice) as most air conditioning units can de-mist your windscreen, side glass and rear screen highly effectively.

A safer drive

Too many traffic accidents are caused by over-tiredness. Turning your air conditioning on will result in cleaner, fresher air. This in turn, helps to prevent drowsiness, meaning you are able to remain fresh and alert.

More fun in a traffic jam

Traffic jams and a hot day – without air conditioning, this is a pretty painful scenario, particularly if you’re stuck in the car with young children or if you’re dressed for business. Sweaty armpits, hot, irritable family members, exhaust fumes seeping in through the open window – they are a distant memory with AC.

A more aerodynamic car

With air conditioning, you can keep your windows closed, even on the hottest of days. This means that your vehicle’s aerodynamics are at optimum level, increasing the safety of you and your passengers and reducing exterior noise.

Contrary to what you may have heard, AC doesn’t waste huge amounts of fuel. No, it’s not particularly economical to use your air conditioning if you’re driving ten to fifteen minutes at a time in a built up area. But for longer journeys, AC will barely affect fuel consumption. In fact, using your air conditioning is likely to save you money if you were to otherwise open the car windows.

Keep up to date with your AC service

Remember that all cars will need an AC service by the time they are three to four years old. From then on, they need to be checked regularly to ensure that your air conditioning system remains efficient and germ-free.

During the winter, our cars are expected to work harder than ever before. They need to start first time, warm us up as quickly as possible and safely get us from A to B.

This means that when it’s cold and damp outside and you’re late for work or the school run, the last thing you want is to discover that your car won’t start. If this was to happen, invariably it will be down to an issue with the battery.

An automotive battery is a rechargeable battery that supplies an initial zap of electrical energy to your vehicle in order for its electrical components to work and to start your car’s engine. You can have the fanciest paint job, the most expensive tyres and all the upgrades and mod cons you could think of, but without a battery, your car isn’t going anywhere.

Winter worry

In the winter, your car’s battery has to deliver more current than usual for the starter motor to be able to start the engine. The colder weather has us automatically turning on the heater, heated windscreens and seats, the wipers, the lights, all of which also rely on your car’s battery to operate and use up a lot of its power.

Yet low temperatures have a big effect on the chemical process that takes place inside the battery in order to produce and store electricity. Even if you do get your car to start, your battery will find it more difficult to recharge when you’re driving. Simply put, the cold reduces your battery’s ability to produce and hold charge.

So what can be done to prevent a dead battery this winter?

Get your battery checked

When your car gets serviced, clamps and connections to the battery will be automatically checked by your garage. However, if it’s been months since your car’s last service, it would be worth taking it in for a winter check to ensure that these components are secure and corrosion-free.

Charge your battery regularly

If you drive a decent distance on a regular basis, you probably won’t need to charge your battery. However, regular, short trips can play havoc with your car’s battery. It has to work hard to start your engine in the cold weather, and then doesn’t have enough time to recharge during the drive.

Charging your battery is easy – you can easily find and buy an intelligent battery charger or modern battery conditioner from your local auto specialist or online.

The RAC recommends that if you tend to use your car for short trips, you charge your battery on a weekly basis during the winter months to stop if from going flat.

Switch off loads

Your battery has to produce electrical energy to start a range of components in your car. Remember to turn off your exterior and interior lights, windscreen wipers, radio and heater before your turn off your engine at the end of a trip. This will reduce the amount of power your battery will have to deliver the next time you turn the ignition.

It is also important to note that certain electrical components in your car can place high demands on the battery whilst you are driving. These include heated seats and heated windows, as well as certain mp3 players, iPods, SatNavs and in-car DVD players. Ideally, don’t use them any longer than you need to.

Park in a sheltered spot

Many of us don’t have a choice when it comes to parking – it’s either a drive or street and that’s it. But if you do have a garage, we suggest you use it over the winter months. Sheltering your car from low temperatures can protect your battery from draining.

Replace your battery

If your battery is more than five years old, it is likely that it is weaker and less likely to hold charge effectively at the best of times. In the winter, this could spell disaster as the cold temperatures will reduce a weak battery’s performance even further.

Driving in the winter - stay safe in the snow

Driving safely in the snow...

We’ve got to say – we’ve never heard of ‘thundersnow’ before. But apparently it’s on its way and could very well blight parts of the UK from today onwards.

‘Thundersnow’ is also known as a winter thunderstorm or thunder snowstorm. Instead of rain falling like a typical thunderstorm, the primary precipitation is snow. According to the Met Office, Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of the North West will be affected today, with Wales and Eastern England likely to see blizzard-type conditions by Thursday or Friday.

It is unlikely that the snow will build up as it is expected to take the form of showers. However, it serves as a reminder that although there may not have been a white Christmas, we still have plenty of cold weather to get through.

So the question has to be asked – are you confident that you know how to safely drive in the snow?

Snowy conditions can make driving even short distances challenging, no matter how experienced or confident you may be. Poor decisions and perilous conditions can lead to accidents, so it is essential that you are adequately prepared before embarking on a journey in the snow.

Here are M&BM Motors’ top tips for staying safe when driving in the snow:

Do you really need to drive?

This is the first question you should ask yourself – is it absolutely necessary to venture out in the snow? Could you work from home? Walk rather than drive? The best way to avoid an accident is to avoid driving in the first place.

However, if you have no alternative but to drive in snowy conditions, it is important that you:

Plan your journey – know exactly where you’re going, get updates on your route and consider parts of the journey that may be badly affected by adverse conditions, such as country lanes or steep hills and valleys.

Add time to your journey – before you set off, you will need to clear any snow from your vehicle, and de-ice and de-mist your windscreen. You may also need to de-ice your lock if temperatures are very low.

Don’t automatically turn on your wipers – if your wipers are frozen, your wiper control fuse could blow if you try to turn them on. If your car has auto wiper control, ensure that you have turned it off in cold weather.

Top up your car’s screenwash – without the right screenwash, your wipers will be practically useless. Use a good quality screenwash that can prevent water from freezing even in temperatures as low as -35ºC.

Check your tyres – you need to have an excellent grip when driving on the snow, so it is essential that your tyres have a deep tread. Ideally you would invest in winter tyres, which are specifically designed to deal with colder temperatures. Click here for more information about winter tyres .

Pack your winter driving kit – you may have de-icer and a scraper in the car but this is just the beginning of what you may need if you get stuck in treacherous conditions. Click here for more information about what you should have in your boot just in case.

Wear dry, comfortable footwear so your feet remain responsive when driving – it is vital that make sure you remain warm in your vehicle. You may want to take a coat, hat, gloves and scarf just in case you break down or get stuck in the snow. Sunglasses can also help to reduce glare.

Drive safely – accelerate gently and move to a higher gear as quickly as you can. Drive slowly but steadily and remember that any controls – from steering to changing gears – should be done gently and smoothly. When turning a corner, brake before you turn as this will help your car grip to the road. If you do start to skid, try not to panic. Take your foot off the accelerator and just make sure that your car’s wheels are turned in the direction you want to go. Use a lower gear when going downhill and try not to brake unless absolutely necessary.

Keep a safe distance from any other road users – as much as ten times the usual gap.

And finally, ask yourself again, is it absolutely necessary to venture out in the snow?

After Bonfire Night, is your car squealing like a firework

Is your car backfiring like a firework...

November is a month of bonfires and fireworks. On bonfire weekend, millions of us headed to our local parks, fields and back gardens to watch the bonfire being lit and a tirade of colourful and noisy fireworks shooting into the air in rhythm to the warbling tones of Coldplay and Katy Perry.

Yet these noises – bangs, pops, whizzes, squeals and shrieks – may sound amazing coupled with Catherine Wheels and warm fires on a cold November night but not so good when emanating from your car. And whilst many of us love watching the fireworks so much that we don’t care how cold it is, the same can’t be said when traipsing to work and back.

Sadly, if you don’t make sure that your car is ready for the winter temperatures, it’s very likely that you will end up having to get to work, do the school pick-up or go shopping without the comfort and warmth of your vehicle.

So in the spirit of Bonfire Night, let’s talk about certain noises you really can’t – and shouldn’t – ignore when it comes to your car…

Car hissing like a squib?

If, whilst driving or after you’ve turned the engine off, you hear a hissing noise from the engine compartment, it might mean that your engine is overheating. It could also be leaking coolant from its coolant system.

To check, carefully open the bonnet and look for any evidence of coolant leaking from the engine, the radiator or hoses. Do you smell a sweet odour? It’s likely that your antifreeze is leaking.

As a temporary measure you can add more coolant but if the system is leaking, the only way to fix it is to repair the leak. Make sure you never open the radiator or coolant reservoir cap until the engine has cooled down or you risk serious injury. And then call your local, trusted garage.

Wheel squealing?

If you notice a cyclic squealing noise coming from your wheel, which may change in pitch the slower or faster your drive, it could be down to a wheel bearing or axle failing. It is imperative that you have your car checked out as soon as possible as this sort of issue could result in the wheel locking or coming away from the car entirely!

Remember that this is not to be confused with the groaning or creaking noises that may come from your brake pads. In wet weather, the moisture can cause your brake pads to swell and drag slightly, hence the noise. However, if you hear a screeching noise when you apply the brakes, there is a good chance that your car’s brake pads need to be replaced.

Whining noises when you turn a corner?

If you can hear whining or humming when you take a corner, it could mean that your wheel bearings are wearing.

Exhaust roaring?

Have you noticed that your exhaust roars when driving – particularly when accelerating? If so, it’s likely that there is a leak in the exhaust system. It is very important that you have this looked at and repaired.

The noise itself is not the issue, but there is a chance that exhaust gases could infiltrate the passenger compartment. Exhaust gases contain the highly dangerous Carbon Monoxide. Only the tiniest amount could greatly affect concentration and reaction times. You could end up feeling dizzy, nauseated and tired. In higher concentrations, you and any passengers could be dead within a matter of minutes.

Rattling, pinging or hammering sounds coming from the bonnet?

No, none of them sound very healthy, do they? These sounds are all related to combustion issues – namely detonation, pre-ignition and spark knock, which, if left unchecked, can all be very bad news.

Loud tapping or knocking sound coming from the engine?

This could be from a carbon build-up in the engine but it could also be a faulty piston or loose bearing, both of which could destroy your vehicle’s engine. It is imperative that you pull over immediately and get it checked out.

The clocks go back on 30 October 2016 - is your car night-driving ready

Are you ready for the darker nights...

It’s nearly that time of year again. Marking to official end of British summer time, the clocks in the UK will revert to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) on October 30 th 2016. At 1am, they will go back one hour.

If you tend to get confused as to whether the clocks should go forward or back, an easy rule to follow is ‘Spring forward, Fall back!’

When the clocks go back, the mornings will be lighter but the nights darker. Therefore you should ensure that you drive responsibly in the evening. This is because night time driving conditions are very different to driving in the day. In fact, road collision statistics show that 40% of collisions take place at night.

At night, vision is reduced which makes it more difficult to see potential hazards and other road users, in particular pedestrians and cyclists. You will need to concentrate more, so your eyes may become tired much quicker than they would in the day.

It is also more difficult to judge speed and distance; objects may seem closer than they actually are.

Sadly, there are more drivers under the influence of drink or drugs at night, so be vigilant of others driving erratically. Plus, night time is when your body prepares itself for sleep. Tiredness can set in rapidly, sometimes with very little warning.

The most obvious way to reduce the chance of being in an accident is to try not to drive at night. This is not always possible but if you are a nervous or inexperienced driver, a refresher lesson at dusk with a driving instructor could help you gain skills and confidence when driving in the dark.

In addition, it is important to check your car to make sure it is ready for night driving. You might be prepared but is your vehicle?

Vehicle lights

It is illegal to drive at night without fully functioning front and rear lights. You need to check that all of your lights are in proper working order and that they’re clean.

It is also recommended that you turn your lights on well before the sun sets in the evening and for about an hour after the sun rises in the morning to aid visibility for other drivers when driving in twilight.

Drive using your full beams whenever possible but always make sure that you dip them as soon as another road user comes into view. And if you are dazzled by another vehicle’s headlights, avoid looking at them. It’s always recommended that you keep your attention on the left hand kerb.

Speed

Try not to slow down every time you’re faced with oncoming traffic before speeding up again once it passes. This sort of driving can confuse drivers behind you and with lower visibility, your speed is more difficult to judge.

Instead, try to stay at a steady speed that you’re comfortable with, whether there’s oncoming traffic or not.

Windscreen

Make sure you keep those windows clean! Dirty windscreens are more prone to steaming up and can increase glare from other vehicles’ lights.

Windscreen wipers

Stay vigilant

Study the road ahead for any signs of oncoming drivers. You may notice their headlights at the top of a hill or corner, helping you gauge if and when you need to dip those full beams.

Plus, don’t forget about pedestrians and cyclists. Ideally they will be wearing high-vis, but it’s very likely that many will not. In the dark, they can be very difficult to spot so it is important that you pay attention to your surroundings.

Take a break

If you are driving a decent distance late at night, make sure you plan at least one break every two hours. Night driving can sap your energy and as your body is probably trying to gear itself up for sleep, it’s all too easy to fall asleep at the wheel.

Dangers of Autumn driving

Dazzling, low sunlight that can sometimes make visibility almost impossible...

It’s now October. The leaves are falling from the trees, there’s a chill in the air every morning and it won’t be long before the clocks go back. And you are probably already noticing a difference in your daily commute.

For example, we are willing to bet you are using your car’s sun visor a lot more at the moment. The autumn brings many changes, not least the dazzling, low sunlight that can sometimes make visibility almost impossible.

So what do you need to look out for this autumn? Here is M&BM Motors’ autumn checklist:

Low sun

Yes it’s lovely that the sun is still out but not when it’s glaring through the windscreen every time you turn a corner. Low sun can be a problem in the morning and at sunset, so it is important that you are prepared if you regularly drive at those times.

Make sure your windscreen is clean – inside and out – and make good use of your sun visor. You may also want to put a spare pair of sunglasses in the car just in case.

If you are suddenly dazzled, slow down, but don’t come to a sudden stop as drivers behind you may also have been dazzled and may not be able to brake in time.

Plus it is worth remembering that if the sun is behind you, it is probably affecting those approaching you on the other side of the road. Stay vigilant as others may not be as well prepared as you are.

Look after your windscreen

Scratches and chips on the glass can also affect visibility in the low sun, so if your windscreen could do with replacing, it would be a good idea to do it now.

If your windscreen is in good condition, you will still want to make sure it’s clean. Windscreen wiper blades only last up to two years so autumn is a great time to replace worn blades.

Top up your windscreen washer fluid regularly and use an additive to reduce the chance of freezing.

Anti-freeze

It might be a couple of months before snow and ice become an issue (here’s hoping!) but a frozen engine is incredibly expensive to repair. Therefore now is the ideal time to check your anti-freeze.

Refer to your handbook as it is important you use the correct type – using the wrong anti-freeze or mixing two types can damage your engine.

Battery

Autumn heralds a sharp rise in breakdowns. Electrical loads are higher in the colder months as you expect more from your car’s heating and lights. If you are concerned about your battery now, don’t leave it too long – get it checked or replaced now to avoid the hassle and expense of a breakdown later.

Tyres

You will also expect more from your tyres over the winter. Ideally you’ll need at least 3mm of tread and you’ll want to check their condition and pressure.

Bulbs

You’re likely to be driving in the dark much more – particularly once the clocks go back. Make sure you check your lights regularly and don’t forget the brake lights. It is easy to replace bulbs but if you are unsure, refer to your handbook or pop in to M&BM Motors – we’ll be happy to help.

Travelling tips for when travelling in the summer...

The summer holidays are well and truly underway, which will involve at least a few long car journeys. In fact, there will be some days when it feels like most of the country is heading in the same direction at precisely the same time.

Highways England carried out an internet survey, which revealed some interesting facts about our summer holiday travel habits.

For example, almost 60% of holidaymakers were planning on travelling on a Friday or Saturday. During peak getaway times, there can be more than 5,000 vehicles every hour leaving London via the M3. 4,000 per hour will be heading up the M6 towards to Lake District, with the same amount making their way through Somerset on the M5. And if you’re going anywhere near the seaside or any other major tourist destination this summer, you are likely to come across a lot of traffic doing exactly the same thing.

Unless you enjoy sitting in traffic jams (is there such a person?), it would be very wise to plan your journey to minimise the chances of spending more time in the car than on your holiday.

Here are our top tips:

Setting off

During the summer holidays, most campsites, holidays parks and self catering accommodation enforces a Friday or Saturday arrival, but if you are able to avoid those days, we would thoroughly recommend doing so. It would also be wise to travel early or late so you don’t end up having to deal with commuter traffic on top of the holiday jams.

Find out how long it will take to reach your destination and then work your timings back from then. Take into consideration the busy traffic – if it’s mean to take three hours, allow for four.

If it is a long journey or you are travelling with younger children, plan a break – perhaps a lunch stop of somewhere with some outside space such as a playground so they can get rid of that pent-up energy.

Check your car

It’s all very well making sure you’ve packed your flip flops, bucket and spade and waterproofs (it is the UK after all!) but don’t forget to carry out those basic checks on your vehicle before you go – a breakdown would be a very stressful – and expensive – start to your summer holiday.

Essential holiday checks include:

Tyre pressure and tread
Engine oil levels
Radiator coolant levels
Screen wash levels
Windscreen wipers
Fuel levels

Are you using a roof rack or bike rack? Ensure it is properly secured – if anything falls off it’s not just inconvenient – it could be very dangerous to the traffic behind you.

Check the weather forecast

A hot day can make the driver more tired and passengers more irritable. If it looks like you’ll be travelling in warm weather, pack plenty of cold drinks and snacks and factor in some extra breaks.

On the flip side, wet and windy weather can increase the risk of accidents and slow down traffic, so you may want to allow more time to reach your destination.

Keep an eye on the traffic situation

No matter how well you plan your journey, traffic incidents still happen. Bad enough when the roads aren’t busy, but what could hold you up for a few minutes on a ‘normal’ day could set you back hours during peak travel times.

If you need to make a flight or ferry by a certain time, make sure you build in a safety margin just in case. No-one wants to sit in an airport for longer than they need to but it’s better than the alternative of missing your flight altogether.

Torrential rain in the summer...

You would think we would be used to playing Russian roulette with the weather. It may be June but in the UK, that doesn’t guarantee good weather. And in just the last few days alone, we have had beautiful sunshine one moment and flash floods the next.

We can’t be the only ones having to prepare for the day by putting on sandals and reaching for the umbrella seconds later. As one twitter user commented recently, “I swear only in England could it be 30°c but with rain, thunderstorms and sun all in the space of an hour.”

The weather is changing so quickly that people are popping into the supermarket and just minutes later, watching their car float down the road. Not that @maggyvaneijk minded, who “just stood out in the rain so I could pretend to be in a Mariah Carey video.”

As frustrating yet amusing as this all is, the Met Office has revealed that this month is set to be the wettest June ever. Torrential rain, thunderstorms and lightning are set to batter the UK and as such, severe weather warnings will soon be in place.

High temperatures are triggering heavy downpours, which brings the risk of flooding, particularly in urban areas. And in turn, this is likely to result in disruption to travel, as well as potential dangers such as aquaplaning.

Were you aware that the combination of heat and rain can play havoc with your car? People may talk about the strain winter puts on our vehicles but in reality, summer can be just as challenging – and expensive.

Here are M&BM Motors’ top tips to ensure that your vehicle doesn’t become another casualty of the summer rain.

Engine coolant

Did you know that if you don’t regularly check your engine coolant levels, you could end up with a bill of more than £1,000? Engine coolant is vital in order to prevent your car from overheating in the summer.

Check that your coolant fluid level remains between the minimum and maximum marks on a weekly basis when the engine is cold. If you notice that the level has dropped, we recommend that you take your vehicle to a garage as soon as possible. You engine’s coolant level should remain pretty constant between annual services, so any dip could spell trouble.

Battery

The summer heat can take a toll on your car’s battery. Make sure it is fully charged – the last thing you want is to end up in a car with a dead battery in 30°c heat. With no power, there won’t be any air conditioning and you’ll be lucky if a recovery vehicle gets to you within the hour.

Tyres

If you still have your winter tyres on, we implore you to change them back to summer or standard tyres. Summer tyres have been specifically engineered to offer superior performance and traction in both dry and wet conditions, and in temperatures over 7°c.

Constructed using a soft compound and engineering with special tread patterns that offer an enhanced grip on wet and dry roads, summer tyres also offer a resistance to traction, dry grip and aquaplaning that winter tyres simply cannot match.

Make sure you monitor your tyre pressure on a regular basis – according to the AA, punctures are the most common cause of summer breakdowns.

It is also vital that your tyres’ treads are at least 1.6mm, particularly when heavy downpours are predicted. The tread disperses any surface water, which could otherwise cause you to aquaplane. The deeper the tread, the more water is dispersed.

Air conditioning

Bodywork

It makes sense that most local authorities schedule in essential road works and maintenance for the warmer, drier (ahem!) months. However, road works inevitably means tar and stones – which can play havoc with your car’s bodywork.

Therefore, it is important that to minimise the chances of loose debris damaging your bodywork, you stay within the recommended speed limits when driving through work zones. You should also place plenty of space between you and other vehicle or your car could end up being scratched by debris flicked up by other vehicles.

Air filter

We are hoping that these torrential downpours won’t last all summer. With this in mind, remember that your air filter is likely to work much harder during the drier months, as its purpose is to prevent dirt and debris from entering your car’s engine.

Replace your air filter every year and it should continue to keep the air flowing into your vehicle’s engine.

Anyone who has ever been stuck in a traffic jam in the summer will know just how beneficial air conditioning is. Being bumper to bumper with other cars for hours is more than a little annoying; add being stuck to your leather seats and an unpleasant experience soon turns into an absolute nightmare.

In addition, you may not have realised, but your air conditioning can help reduce pollen levels in your vehicles – something that hay fever sufferers will be very thankful for.

Therefore, it is really important to make sure that your car’s air conditioning system is fully prepared for the summer.

Refrigerant gas

Your vehicle’s air conditioning works in the same way as a fridge – refrigerant gas cools and circulates the air, creating an ambient, comfortable temperature and a much more pleasant driving experience. On average, around 15% of this refrigerant gas will be lost each year. This means that ideally, your air conditioning unit should be serviced every two years or 30,000 miles – whichever comes first.

Just like any other liquid in your car, your air conditioning system’s coolant will need to be topped up on a regular basis (this may also be termed as a re-gas or recharge). If you don’t keep your air conditioning above a certain level, the coolant will have to be drained and replenished – a job that is much more expensive than a quick recharge.

If you notice that your coolant is dropping faster than you think it should, you may have a leak in your air conditioning system. It is important that you get this checked out as soon as possible as the gases involved are harmful to the environment.

Noticing drips?

Have you noticed any water pooling underneath your parked car after you’ve recently driven it? Don’t panic! This is caused by the air conditioning – it is designed not only to cool air but also dehumidify water. This condensed water drips from the evaporator and is released beneath the car. Think about it – the water has to go somewhere! Better out than in!

Smoking air vents?

We wouldn’t blame you for being alarmed at the sight of white smoke pluming from the air vents! However, unless the smoke is acrid, there is absolutely nothing to worry about. It’s simply water vapour that has passed too quickly through your vehicles air conditioning. Instead of turning into water droplets, the vapour is pushed straight through the unit as ‘smoke’.

You will simply need to run the system for a few minutes for this to stop.

Spring is the perfect time to spring clean your car

Spring is the best time to clean your car...

Yes, we know it sounds obvious, but there is a very good reason why you should thoroughly clean your vehicle in the spring.

After the cold, wet and muddy winter months, a good spring clean comes with a variety of benefits, not least the fact that it can maintain your vehicle’s value.

You may regularly wash and vacuum your car (or pay someone else to do it) but there are many people who only clean their vehicles once or twice a year. If you are guiltily thinking ‘that would be me’, now is the best time to get the sponge, bucket and chamois leather out (or pay someone else to do it!)

Exterior cleaning

Even though we mainly escaped the snow, many roads were gritted over the winter, which means that the underside of your car may very well be caked in salt-laden mud. If you ignore it, salt can cause corrosion to your vehicle. If left unchecked, once-small repairs can turn into a massive dent in your wallet – and a serious reduction in your vehicle’s resale value.

Instead, remove that winter grime with suitable cleaning products, starting from the top and working your way down. This means that any stubborn dirt – which tends to accumulate towards the bottom of your vehicle – will have had time to soak by the time you get to it.

Pay close attention to the undersides of doors and sills, as well as the front and rear wheel arches as this is where corrosion is most likely to occur.

If you can, use a hosepipe to get rid of any mud and salt and once dry, check to see if there is any damage such as corrosion underneath your car. If you are concerned, take your car to your local garage so that they can inspect it on your behalf.

Don’t forget that polish doesn’t just make your car look attractive – used correctly it also offers a certain level of paintwork protection. Just make sure that you avoid inferior products and apply according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Interior cleaning

We may have been lucky in terms of snow but the UK has seen its fair share of rain this winter. Think of all the times you’ve got into your car soaking wet in the last few months. Are you confident that your car has been able to dry out properly? Has there been enough heat or ventilation or does your vehicle smell a little bit like… wet dog?

Sadly, not only may you now have a rather pungent vehicle, but leaving a damp interior to its own devices can also lead to discoloured upholstery and rotting carpets, which can have a massive impact on your car’s value. Therefore, it is important that you do everything possible to help your vehicle dry out.

Choose a warm and sunny day if you can – the last thing you want to do it try to dry a car out in the pouring rain. You will find all the specialist interior cleaning products you’ll need for your upholstery, linings, trim, interior glass and dashboard at your local motoring maintenance shop. Remove any loose mats and vacuum your carpets well. If you can, shampoo your carpets but make sure you don’t use too much water and leave the doors and windows open for as long as you can to let the carpets dry.

Have you noticed that your carpets are already a little wet? This could mean that rain water is able to penetrate your car’s underbody sealing compound so it is essential that you take it to your local garage so that they can investigate the problem.

Tyres

Have you been using winter tyres? Now is the time to change them back. And don’t forget to check your tyres’ condition and tread. Your car has had to work hard over the colder months so look out for any tyre damage, such as splits or bulges.

Don't get caught out this winter... keep safe

Did it snow where you are? In contrast to December’s incredibly mild weather, the drop in temperature may have taken some drivers by surprise. Freezing conditions gripped the UK and ice left many roads treacherous. Although warmer weather is forecasted, snow is likely to be falling in the coming weeks.

Last month was the mildest December on record, so it’s unlikely you’ve given much thought to getting your car winter ready up until now. But we strongly recommend doing the relevant checks and preparations if you haven’t already.

‘Here they go again’, we hear some of you say. ‘I’ve never bothered to get my car ‘winter ready’ before and I’ve always been perfectly fine.’ Well, here are some statistics, which may shock you.

Approximately 22% of all vehicle crashes each year are weather related – as in, accidents that occur in adverse weather such as snow, sleet, rain, fog or severe crosswinds. In ten years (2004-2013), there were 1,258,978 weather-related crashes, with 445,303 people injured and 5,897 dying as a result.

Doing a few simple checks can make a massive difference – surely you don’t want to become yet another statistic?

Tyres

Worn tyres won’t hold the road in wet or icy conditions, leading to aquaplaning or skidding. Make sure your tyres have adequate tread, are at the correct pressure and haven’t suffered any damage that could compromise their safety or performance.

We also recommend that you consider winter tyres if you live in an area that tends to see deep snow; further information about winter tyres can be found here .

Battery

The engine may be your vehicle’s heart but without a working battery it simply won’t go. In February 2012 alone, the RAC attended more than 50,000 battery-related call-outs – more than any other issue.

Your car’s battery has to work extra hard in the cold weather so it’s important to ensure it’s in tip top condition during the winter months.

Wiper blades

Remember that if wiper blades become frozen to your windscreen, they can easily get damaged if you turn them on before they thaw. Check your wiper blades for any damage and replace them if necessary. And try to give your blades plenty of time to warm up before attempting to free them.

Coolant

Check that your engine coolant is between the minimum and maximum markers and that you added sufficient anti-freeze.

Screenwash

Not all screenwash is the same, so it is important that you use a solution that is suitable for freezing temperatures. You should look for a screenwash that protects to at least -10ºC.

Driving in icy conditions...

As snow and ice hit, driving conditions become far more treacherous. Ideally, it is recommended that you should only drive when absolutely necessary.

However, the demands of modern life means that going into hibernation mode every time there’s a snow flurry isn’t always possible. Plus let’s face it – other countries with far harsher winters still manage to carry on regardless.

So how can you still travel to work and back and remain safe?

Tyres play a vital part in how successful you are in getting from A to B in snowy and icy conditions. And choosing the right tyres will also have a significant effect on your safety. The majority of us will choose our tyres based almost entirely on price. As long as they fit and they’re cheap, they’re the tyres you want. The last thing you then want to do is buy another set of tyres just for the winter months.

But winter tyres exist for a very good reason. Winter tyres have been specifically developed to provide optimum driving performance in temperatures below 7ºC. Contrary to popular belief, they are not just for driving in the snow – if it’s cold, wet, icy, slushy or snowing, you will benefit from a level of grip and handling that no summer tyre can match.

You may think winter tyres are a waste of time, but believe us when we say that drivers in the UK would get plenty of use out of them. After all, the UK generally sees temperatures regularly drop below 7ºC from October to March – that’s six months of the year!

What are winter tyres?

The tread on a winter tyre is designed to bite into snow and ice, which creates an interlocking grip. A winter tyre has more grooves in comparison to a summer tyre, so more snow sticks to the tyre. Snow then sticks to snow, further improving grip. Winter tyres also have far more sipes, which means that there are more biting edges that can lock into the road, enabling your car to accelerate and brake in icy conditions.

In addition, the tread pattern on a winter tyre can disperse more water than a summer tyre, reducing the risk of aquaplaning.

All of these features mean far better grip and handling on the road.

Road safety tests have seen the following results:

Winter tyres vs summer tyres travelling at 62mph in 5ºC – stopping distance reduced by over 10m
Winter tyres vs summer tyres braking on an icy road from 20mph to rest – stopping distance reduced by 11m
Winter tyres vs sumer tyres braking on a snowy road from 30mph to rest – stopping distance reduced by 8m

European law

Are you planning a road trip to Europe in the next couple of months? Were you aware that in certain European countries it is a legal requirement to fit winter tyres? You are legally obligated to fit winter tyres to your car if you are travelling to Sweden, Finland, Austria or Germany.

Other countries strongly recommend winter tyres, although it is not a legal requirement. These include France, Italy, Poland and Switzerland.

What about the expense?

You will have to spend more money buying another set of tyres. However, remember that whilst your winter tyres are being used, your summer ones are not being worn down. Because you will have two sets of tyres in circulation, they will last longer. Plus there are several cheap winter tyres available for most makes and models of vehicle. You don’t have to break the bank and go premium.

Travelling by car at Christmas and New Year

A lot of the Christmas holidays can be spent in the car...

Christmas is not just about eating, drinking and spending in excess; it’s also a time for family and friends. For some of us, our loved ones are literally around the corner. But for many people, a lot of the Christmas holidays are spent in the car. Inevitably, this means having to share the roads with thousands of other families on their way to spend Christmas Day with parents, Boxing Day with the in-laws and New Years Eve with old friends.

If you know you’re going to be doing some significant miles in the car this Christmas, don’t stress. Do a little preparation now and although you won’t be able to do much about congested roads, you will be safe in the knowledge that your car is ready to go when you are.

Fill up first

Make sure you have plenty of fuel. We recommending filling your tank a few days before Christmas. Otherwise you may end up in a massive queue at the garage – not the best way to start a journey!

Check your levels

Check your oil, water land anti-freeze levels, ensure you have plenty of de-icer and fill up with windscreen wash.

If you are going to be packing the car with luggage and presents, remember to check your car’s tyre pressures accordingly.

What’s the weather like?

Check the weather forecast a couple of days before your journey. Most five day forecasts are pretty reliable and by using the Met Office website, you can also get details about visibility. If snow or ice are a definite possibility, you may want to reschedule your trip. Seeing your loved ones over the Christmas holidays is important, but not to the point where you should put your family’s safety at risk.

Have you packed your essential winter driving kit? It may be mild where you live but if you are travelling a decent distance, the weather could be very different once you reach your destination. Get ahead of the traffic

Even if it’s a route you’ve done many times, plan your journey in advance and take advantage of the various websites available that provide up-to-date information about any roadworks, accidents and traffic jams that may impact your trip. Highways England and the AA’s traffic news section are both highly recommended sources of information.

There might be the ‘usual’ way of getting from A to B but if everyone else has had the same idea, it’s always worth knowing a couple of alternative routes so you can try to escape any queuing traffic.

Try to avoid rush hour. If that means leaving first thing in the morning or late at night to make good time, it’s still better than sitting in traffic for half the day. Just make sure that you’ve had plenty of sleep – don’t attempt to drive at 11pm if you haven’t had the chance to rest first.

Stay safe and sensible

It goes without saying that you should never drink and drive. Not only are the police extra vigilant over the Christmas and New Year period, but you are risking your life, the lives of your passengers and the lives of other road users and pedestrians.

If you have one two many the night before, give yourself plenty of time to recover and for the alcohol to wear off before you get behind the wheel.

The temperatures are dropping and the nights are getting longer – are you and your vehicle prepared for the worst or will you be left in the snow without a shovel this winter?

It might sound as if we’re expecting you to fill your car with half of the contents of your garage, and it is true that many winters may pass without you needing any of the kit we propose you keep in your car. Plus forecasters are predicting that winter 2015 will be the coldest and snowiest Britain has seen in 50 years. Flashback to five years ago, when in 2010, extreme snowfall closed roads and brought trains and motorways to a complete standstill. It included the UK’s coldest December since Met Office records began. Vehicles were trapped on the M8 for more than 10 hours, Eurostar rail services were cancelled and Gatwick Airport and Edinburgh Airports were both closed all day on December 1 st . A total of 19 people died as a direct result of the icy temperatures and treacherous conditions.

This winter may be worse.

New drivers keep safe on the road...

The year after you pass your driving test is the year you are most vulnerable. You may have the ability to drive but new challenges such as driving solo, at night, on a motorway or in an unknown area will further test your confidence and skills.

Plus, like it or not, younger drivers are more likely to be involved in an accident. Brake, the road safety charity, has some shocking figures. Drivers aged 17-19 only make up 1.5% of the UK’s licence holders but are involved in 12% of serious and fatal crashes.

Research has shown that younger drivers are more at risk because of a combination of youth and inexperience. They are more likely to take risks and less able to spot hazards. Younger people tend to be able to pick up skills quicker than their older counterparts, so can become over-confident in their driving ability.

A seasoned driver will know that driving required a range of mental skills. You need to be able to balance your attention between steering, changing gears, and braking with more demanding cognitive tasks such as identifying and responding to hazards. Younger drivers have been found to show poorer attention, visual and speed awareness, hazard recognition and avoidance. Maintain your vehicle. To you, your new car is a means of getting from A to B. It probably represents freedom. However, in order for it to stay safe and roadworthy, you need to look after it. It’s good to remember that if you get six penalty points within the first two years of passing your first driving test, you will lose your licence. This means that you will have to take both your theory and practical tests again.

It’s only natural that you feel anxious letting a mechanic loose on your vehicle. The unscrupulous practices of some garages have given the motor industry a negative reputation but thankfully this is all changing and standards are becoming higher across the board.

The Government is keen to develop uniformity of quality across the MOT industry. One of the ways in which they are doing this is to update the testing system to increase standards.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), the body responsible for overseeing MOT testing standards in England, is in the process of creating new qualifications that will improve the professionalism of MOT testers and Authorised Examiners across the UK.

The theory behind the move is that more investment into training will ultimately increase service standards.

What will the new rules mean for motorists?

The new assessment strategy will ensure MOT testers and Authorised Examiners receive ongoing training and professional development. This will take place on an annual basis to protect skills and quality.

How is the training going to be delivered?

The DVSA has partnered with the Sector Skills Council for the automotive retail industry and representatives from the MOT sector to develop a national framework for standards.

This work will lead to the launch of a new national qualification in MOT assessment and those successfully graduating from the scheme will be issued with a Certificate of Successful Completion.

However, the assessment doesn’t end there. To ensure MOT testers continue to offer the highest quality services, DVSA Examiners will perform a follow up check to ensure the criteria is continuing to be met on a day-to-day basis. If at this point the candidate has met all the conditions, a Certificate of Competence will be issued.

What happens next?

Under the reformed system, MOT testers must complete at least three hours of refresher training on an annual basis. Currently, qualified MOT testers are required to complete two days of refresher training every five years.

The work is part of a major revamp of MOT services to improve public confidence and satisfaction. The DVSA is currently involved in an MOT Modernisation project looking at how it can update and develop the current scheme to improve the quality of testing.

This work, being undertaken by DVSA staff, IT specialists and MOT experts, will also see the introduction of a new modernised computer system in September this year which will replace the current facility.

The school holidays are just around the corner. You may be lucky enough to be going on holiday this summer. You might be flying off to Spain, Italy or even further afield.

Or, like many of us, you may have decided to stay closer to home this year. Perhaps you’re crossing the Channel or travelling to Scotland, Wales or an English seaside town. If this is the case, it won’t just be the family that is going on holiday. Your car will be too. So ask yourself – is your vehicle summer holiday ready?

High temperatures and busy roads can place additional demands on both drivers and cars. The last thing you want is to start your trip completely stressed out because the car has overheated or had a puncture.

Keep cool

It’s hardly surprising that the hotter summer months can play havoc with your car’s cooling system and cause serious damage that can be costly to repair.

Check your vehicle’s coolant reservoir level on a regular basis

Keep an eye on your coolant hoses – if you notice wet or white staining this could spell trouble

Check your fan – let your car’s engine idle for up to ten minutes. Your cooling fan should cut in automatically

Check fluids

We all need fluids to stay healthy, hydrated and active in the summer. Your car is no different. In addition to coolant, make sure your vehicle’s fluid levels are topped up to avoid a potential breakdown in the middle of nowhere:

Engine oil
Windscreen wash
Fuel

Punctures

High temperatures mean hot roads. Hot roads aggravate existing damage to your vehicle’s tyres. Plus, if they are under inflated, this only adds to the problem. Under inflated tyres cause more friction and heat, resulting in weak spots turning into punctures or worse still, blowouts.

Before you go any distance, you must:

Check your tyres’ condition and pressures. If you are carrying extra load (and who doesn’t end up with everything but the kitchen sink when they’re off on holiday?), you also need to adjust tyre pressures to suit.

If you are taking a caravan or trailer tent, remember to check its tyres for cracking. It’s likely that it’s been sat dormant for many months, which can lead to tyres degrading.

Save on fuel

There are lots of ways to reduce your car’s fuel consumption in the summer. Tempting as it may be, open windows actually cause extra drag, which can affect the amount of fuel your vehicle uses. Try opening the air vents instead.

Also, air conditioning will cool your car but does it need to stay on the entire time once it does? Consider turning it down or off, and don’t use it if you have the windows open – it’s just wasting fuel.

Roof boxes can reduce drag so if you do need to carry luggage on the roof of your car, it may be an idea to invest in one. Just remember to remove it once you reach your holiday destination or you’ll soon find that those little day trips are costing you more than they should in fuel.

Plan your journey

School holidays often spell hours sat in traffic jams. It is well worth looking into alternative routes, as well as the towns and landmarks you will pass on the way. If you are travelling with children, the likelihood is that you will be stopping regularly for toilet and food breaks. By planning ahead, you can reduce a lot of stress and arguments!

Be ready for any emergency

Hopefully your journey will go smoothly. However, cars do break down, no matter how old or new it may be. Putting together an emergency kit will make a massive difference if you do end up in dire straits.

Motorways remain the most hazardous roads to drive on due to the high speeds involved and the volume of cars. Many of these accidents, however, could be avoided if drivers were to make safer decisions.

A survey by breakdown organisation the AA shows more than 800 people are killed or injured on average every year on hard shoulders and lay-bys in the UK.

The AA Populus poll which surveyed 18,806 AA members, revealed 24% of drivers have risked their life unnecessarily by non-emergency use of the hard shoulder.

Reasons for using the hard shoulder include illness or toilet breaks (both 5%), running out of fuel (4%), reading a map (2%) and making a non-urgent call (1%).

It is illegal for a motorist to stop on the hard shoulder, carriageway, slip road or central reservation for any reason other than an emergency. Motorists caught flouting the law risk a fine of up to £100 and three penalty points on their licence.

While it’s not always possible to avoid breaking down on the hard shoulder, sometimes a car will show amber warning lights which means it is safe to keep driving until the next exit. Similarly, if your car alerts you to incorrect tyre pressure, it’s safe to keep driving until the next exit rather than stopping on the hard shoulder and risking an accident.

What should I do if I break down on the hard shoulder?

Stopping a vehicle on the hard shoulder is always dangerous regardless of the reason.

There are some vital safety precautions to bear in mind in the event you are forced to stop which will help keep you and your passengers safe.

Always exit the vehicle on the left (the exit furthest away from the roadside)
Walk as far away from the vehicle as possible. If a barrier is present, get behind it.
Call for assistance only when you are in a safe position to do so which is a good distance away from your vehicle
Never remain in the vehicle, whatever the weather.

The AA has created an app which can use your smartphone’s GPS to pinpoint your exact location. This information can be sent to the AA’s operational centre, making you much easier to locate and speeding up the response time.

The free app includes AA route planner and traffic data as well as vehicle reminders for MOT, tax, insurance and service dates.

But when it comes to independent garages, many motorists use the same one over and over again because they know they’re going to do a good job.

A survey conducted for garage comparison website RAC Garage Compare highlighted strong loyalty to garages which provided a good service, with 55% of motorists saying they totally trusted the local garage they used.

Millions of motorists use local independent garages to keep up with servicing and MOT needs because they are reliable and offer high quality workmanship.

According to the survey, 56% of drivers say reliability is the most important factor when deciding on a repair garage, followed by customer service next at 19% and cost as third in the list of priorities with just 14% saying this was the most crucial factor.

This means that contrary to popular belief, motorists don’t always base their decision on a garage on price and pay much more attention to reliability and quality standards.

The RAC’s research also showed people were willing to travel a good distance to car repair garages because they offered superior quality repairs. One in five motorists admitted to travelling up to 10 miles to the garage they used most for repairs while one in ten said they were willing to drive as far as 20 miles.

The survey highlighted that motorists felt anxious and distrustful of garages they had never used before.

The RAC has launched an RAC Garage Compare service to give motorists an idea how customers rate repair work and where they can find value for money.

There are a number of reasons why motorists should opt for an independent garage when considering car repairs aside from value for money.

The majority of independent garages allow their customers to decide whether they want to pay for high-quality generic auto parts or branded parts. This can result in significant savings for the motorist if they choose the former, money which is much needed in the current economic climate.

A dealership, meanwhile, is more than likely to use branded parts due to their partner affiliation with a manufacturer.

Non-franchised garages are also renowned for their personal service and willingness to offer discounted rates for multiple repair jobs and repeat customers. You’re far more likely to be able to book in a repair at the last minute, especially if you’re a regular.

Few homeowners would ever consider buying a property without carrying out a full survey on the building. Surprisingly, however, many motorists will buy a second-hand car without prior checks.

New research by motoring organisation RAC has found 70% of used-car buyers have bought a car without delving into the background history of the car.

It’s now easier than ever to look into the history of a second-hand car. In fact, a simple MOT history check can be performed online within minutes, helping you to build a picture of the life of the vehicle.

According to the RAC Car Passport study, which interviewed more than 2,300 motorists, second-hand car buyers are still relying on gut instincts to make purchasing decisions which could later hit them in the pocket.

The research showed only 8% of motorists who have bought a used car decided to pay for a professional inspection to be completed before parting with their hard-earned money.

Even more worryingly, 34% of motorists said they recruited a friend or relative to complete a vehicle check for them instead. And just 10% of those interviewed said they had paid for a history report to be carried out.

The study showed that one in four motorists proceeded to buy a car on ‘face value’ alone and almost half (45%) said they had later felt deceived by the seller. One in five said they felt they had paid too much money for the car – a problem which could have been avoided if they had carried out an independent valuation.

Around 2.7m second-hand cars are sold privately in the UK every year. However, buying a used car can be a risky business. Buyers sometimes end up with overvalued vehicles whose have been tampered with or worse, a written-off vehicle which has been illegally rebuilt.

In other situations, second-hand cars have been stolen before being resold or sold on with an outstanding debt, both situations leaving the buyer with neither a car nor their money.

Many organisations, including the RAC, now offer a vehicle check service to provide buyers with more confidence of the background history of their intended purchase.

Such a scheme not only checks whether the car has any outstanding debt or whether it has been written off, but in many cases provides a valuation that motorists can cross check with the current advertised price.

Buyers often spend hours or days comparing car prices and mileage details to ensure they are receiving value for money before buying their used car. More homework is needed to ensure the vehicle stands up to scrutiny with a thorough history check.

Business drivers spend a good proportion of their working day on the road. Employers have a duty of care to ensure their workforce is as safe as possible while driving, whether their business fleet amounts to less than five cars to 5,000.

Current legislation requires employers to assess the risks posed to and be employees while driving at work. Those organisations which fail to comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act could be held responsible if there is evidence that its fleet management is unsafe or inadequate.

The legislation applies to both company-owned cars and the so-called ‘grey fleet’ – vehicles which are privately owned by members of staff which are used for business journeys.

The latter category is considered a particular safety risk for employers as many organisations have no idea what type of vehicle their employee is driving and whether it is roadworthy. This poses a considerable safety risk to other roadusers.

Prosecutions can be brought against managers and employees for road traffic collisions which occur during a work-related journey, regardless of whether the driver is using their own vehicle or not.

One of the biggest concerns relates to road-worthiness, and whether company cars or privately-owned vehicles are safe and the subject of regular maintenance checks.

It is believed the average age of a privately-owned vehicle is seven years – this is more than twice that of company cars. Statistics show that in 2012 (most recent data), vehicle defects contributed to 2,123 road collisions in Britain, 33 of which resulted in death.

Although an individual driver is primarily responsible for the vehicle’s condition and its insurance, employers retain some liability when the car is used on business.

Book regular eye tests for your workforce drivers. Many drivers in Britain do not have a regular eye test which could compromise their safety and the safety of other road users. Responsible employers subject their driving workers to regular eye exams as a further means of risk-management.

Motoring costs are creeping up every year and unfortunately tyre performance is an area which you cannot ignore. In fact, there’s a legal requirement to ensure your vehicle has four tyres which comply with minimum tread depth.

Aside from legal duties, it’s also crucial for safety purposes that your car has adequate grip on the road. Without good contact, your tyres will do little to protect you in the event an emergency stop in torrential rain or frost.

While we cannot always avoid a blowout situation, such as driving over glass or a nail unexpectedly, it is possible to prolong the life of our tyres by altering our driving habits.

This means that our tyres will travel a greater number of miles for us before requiring replacement, thus shielding us from an unwanted bill for a little longer.

Winter road safety tips:

Ensure windscreens are clear.

It seems an obvious advice tip but it’s surprising how many motorists drive off in the early morning with limited vision due to a frozen windscreen. The chance of an accident is significantly higher if you do not have full vision and you are highly likely to be held accountable if the worst was to happen. To avoid such a situation, top up your antifreeze regularly and get up earlier so you have time to defrost your windscreen before leaving for work.

Modern cars are filled with anti-freeze fluid which is designed to last. This fluid is used to prevent your car’s engine and radiators from freezing when temperatures plummet in winter. It is advisable to ensure your vehicle’s anti-freeze levels never fall below minimum as this will help you avoid potential damage to the engine and radiators which could be expensive to fix. A qualified mechanic or service specialist will be able to carry out the necessary checks.

Keep fuel levels topped up.

By keeping full levels topped up to half at all times, motorists can reduce the risk of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing – resulting in a vehicle that won’t start.

The good news is there are ways to reduce fuel expenditure and the benefits of doing so will last much longer than a month. By taking simple measures to reduce fuel consumption, you can save hundreds of pounds every year – money which can be spent on other household bills or even better, leisure time.

The following list provides some practical tips for lowering your fuel consumption to save money. The amount of savings to be made depends to some extent on your lifestyle. If you commute a long distance to work every day, the difference by adopting these measures can be several hundred pounds every year.

1. Reduce your car’s load

Many motorists don’t realise that by reducing the weight of their car, they will consume less petrol. If your boot is packed with items that you don’t need for day-to-day use, consider emptying and locking it up in the garage. This might mean removing your child’s pram for the daily commute to work, removing the roof or bicycle rack until the weekend, recycling rubbish that you haven’t offloaded yet at the dump and removing anything you’re storing in your car to save space at home (something many of us do!)

4. Reduce idling

Modern cars don’t need to be warmed up before setting off, this wastes fuel in the same way as leaving the engine on to melt freezing windows. It’s one of the oldest myths in the industry and one that continues to cause confusion among motorists. So with car warranties – can any garage perform routine maintenance and servicing?

Thousands of new car owners continue to choose main dealerships for their servicing needs every year as opposed to independent garages. Why? Because they fear that using a local garage will somehow jeapodise or invalidate their car warranty.

Warranty

A warranty is a pledge by a manufacturer about the quality and durability of its product. It promises to repair or replace specified defects or malfunctions during the warranty period.

Legislation exists giving motorists the freedom of where they have their routine car maintenance carried out. This choice is a motorist’s consumer right and legally cannot have any adverse effect on their warranty.

Any servicing or routine maintenance carried out by an independent garage must strictly adhere to the manufacturer’s guidelines. In every situation, genuine parts or lubricants specified by the manufacturer must be used and the services must be carried out according to the schedule.

Failure to meet these specifications could invalidate the warranty should a fault arise in the future.

More competitive prices

There are many reasons why a motorist might favour using an independent garage for their servicing. Independent garages usually offer very competitive prices thanks to lower overheads than main dealers. Many offer a personal, local service and work hard to establish trust with their customers over a long period of time.

If you decide to opt for an independent garage to service your new car, you must ensure they are reputable. Check for industry accreditations and whether the business is a member of The Good Garage Scheme .

Keep your receipts

How often does a taxi need an MOT?

By the nature of the profession, a taxi will require a more rigorous annual safety check than a standard vehicle.

Any vehicle which is used to transport passengers is regarded as a public service vehicle (PSV). Those vehicles which can legally accommodate up to eight passengers, not including the driver, are classed as a taxi.

Vehicles which can seat more than eight passengers are buses subject to different restrictions.

Only a taxi which has passed a PSV is legally entitled to drive on UK roads. The check is designed to ensure vehicles are roadworthy to protect the passengers onboard and other UK drivers.

A taxi driver will need to apply for a PSV at least six weeks before their taxi license is needed to comply with the regulations. The PSV forms an essential part of the licensing process and a license will not be granted without it.

The PSV inspection is similar to an MOT but more thorough. The vehicle will be checked to ensure there is a maximum of eight passenger seats, that a working fire extinguisher is mounted and ready for use, a spare wheel is available as well as the tools to perform the changeover, a roof sign with a minimum width of 750mm and maximum height of 250mm, a permanent roof and four doors either side of the vehicle.

The vehicle should also have PSV insurance and is subject to minimum length restrictions of 3.96m and height of no more than 435mm. The step height should also be no more than 435mm.

In addition to structural characteristics, the test will examine the axel weight of the taxi, the tyre load capacity and the seating plan.

Changes to PSV test regulations in 2010 means that left-hand drive stretched limousines can now be licensed as private hire taxis in the UK as long as the maximum seating capacity is eight passengers in addition to the driver.

To book in for a PSV test, you will need to complete a PV3 application form and a Supplementary PV3 and include the necessary fee.

Long journeys can test the most reliable of vehicles. If a break-down is on the cards, you can guarantee this will happen at the most inconvenient time – on-route to the airport, for example.

Minimise the risk

It is possible to minimise the risk of mechanical failure with preparation and a ‘holiday car check’. Such a check will ensure any faults are identified and repaired before they have a chance to cause travel disruption. They will also ensure the vehicle is safe to drive before you head out on the motorway.

Cooling system: One of the important functions to check pre-long journey is your vehicle’s cooling system. Hot temperatures place extra stress on the engine and cooling system of a vehicle which can result in overheating if both are not maintained.

Failing an MOT can be costly and inconvenient yet motorists can increase their chance of passing this statutory test by carrying out a few simple checks.

As many as 40% of cars and 50% of vans fail their annual MOT first time round as a result of minor faults which could have been identified and corrected prior to the test being carried out. Avoiding failure will save you the cost of a retest fee if you choose to have it done at another MOT service centre and will eliminate any inconvenience. Getting by without a car – even for a day – is a tricky situation, especially if you rely on your car for work or the school run and taking the time to give your vehicle a pre-MOT check could enable you to drive in and out of an MOT in an afternoon.

So what are the most common reasons why cars fail their MOTs?

According to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), formally the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency, the most common reason for MOT failure is lighting failure (effectively a blown bulb) followed by tyre failure (incorrect pressure or worn thread) Both of these problems are easy to spot and fix by an untrained mechanic and will avoid any costly delays to your motoring ability.

To test the amount of tread remaining on a car, use a tread depth gauge which should be available from any good motoring store. By law, tyres have to be 1.6mm or above to be within safety limits however it is highly advisable to change tyres well before they arrive at this depth for the protection of you and your vehicle’s occupants. Worn tyres don’t perform as well in wet weather conditions or in an accident and regardless of MOT requirements it is always worth ensuring they have adequate depth.

Similarly, light bulbs are easily replaced and can be changed independently from a garage providing you pay close attention to the car’s handbook.

Another common reason for failure is damaged windscreen wiper blades. Windscreen wipers can be purchased from some petrol stations, motoring shops and even some supermarkets at a very reasonable cost and could save you in time by helping your vehicle to pass its MOT first time. As soon as your wipers become damaged or fail to adequately clear the screen, it’s time for a replacement. It’s also advisable to top up your screen cleaning fluid prior to a test as will be checked during the MOT.

Thousands of cars fail every year as a result of chipped windscreens. There really is no excuse for driving around with a cracked windscreen which affects driver’s vision as most insurance providers include windscreen repair and replacement as standard and will not penalise motorists for using it. In most situations, claiming for a repair or replaced windscreen will have absolutely no impact on your no claims bonus.

When will my car need its first MOT?

There are many positives to owning a brand new car. One particularly pleasing benefit is the long gap before its first MOT is due.

Cars fresh from the showroom are unlikely to require any immediate repairs. This means an MOT is unnecessary. But it is important to keep up to date with service checks which will identify any potential flaws early.

What is an MOT

An MOT tests the road worthiness of a vehicle to ensure it is safe and doesn’t endanger other road users. Motorists are legally obliged to book their car in for an annual MOT once it is three years old. Any car less than three years old will not need an MOT.

Unless you sign up to a reminder scheme, it will be up to you to look back at your car’s records to see when it was first registered. An MOT is due exactly three calendar years after this date.

The information is normally found on the vehicle’s V5C booklet (log book). So if your car was first registered on April 1 2010 then its first MOT will be due on April 1 2013.

Some vehicles require an MOT at the end of its first year, including ambulances, taxis and private passenger vehicles.

You can renew or book in for your first MOT up to a month before its due and an MOT certificate will be valid for 12 months following the test. Only a Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) approved MOT centre will be acceptable.

Official MOT test centres will display a blue sign with three white triangles. They must also display contact details and fees and appeals information for the DVSA in a public area on the premises.

There are more than 19,000 MOT testing stations in the country but if you’re struggling to find one there’s a number of online resources to help you identify your nearest.

It is a criminal offence to drive a vehicle without a valid MOT. The only exception is if you’re driving your car to a garage to have its MOT.

Many people rely on their MOT certificate to remind them of the date that it’s next due. If you’ve lost your MOT certificate, it is possible to order a replacement simply by calling the MOT centre which carried it out in the first place.

You will need your vehicle registration number and the original MOT test number or alternatively the log book (V5C) reference number. You are likely to be charged up to £10 for the replacement copy.

More than 35 million MOTs take place in the UK every year at around 21,000 authorised premises. Changes were introduced in February 2014 to the site assessment procedures which included new codes of practice and discounted MOT test fees.

There are a number of ways of determining a good MOT garage in addition to checking the list of those suspended from operating including checking whether the garage has any industry accreditation or belongs to any quality schemes. It’s always advisable to gain more than one quote from a car garage for comparison purposes and even in the age of modern communication referrals from friends and family is still the best means of identifying a good garage.

What government body is responsible for regulating MOTs?

From April 2014, the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) which was previously responsible for road safety in the UK including MOT standards will be known as the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency ( DVSA ) following a merger with the Driving Standards Authority (DSA).

VOSA’s role to ensure MOT garages conform and meet regulations to uphold roadworthiness standards will be transferred to the DVSA in a move which will bring increased efficiency and value for money for motorists.

The DVSA, which will employ over 4,000 workers, will be responsible for setting, testing and enforcing driver and vehicle standards across the UK. In addition to conducting theory tests and practical driving assessments, the body will also regulate some 28m MOT tests to ensure they meet safety criteria and reflect the DVSA’s high standards. If a test centre fails to adhere to the DVSA’s strict guidelines, it has the power to take disciplinary action or stop you from operating as a testing station for a specific period of time. If the person who holds the Authorised Examiner (AE) status loses it following disciplinary proceedings, anyone else from the garage who subsequently applies for AE status must be able to prove that they’re independent from the subject of the original action. The scheme is in place to monitor safety standards and performance and the DVSA will need evidence that this is being met.

In announcing the launch the DVSA, a spokesperson said the organisation would build on the crucial work already undertaken to improve road safety in the UK and offer cost effective services to motorists.

“By bringing testing and standards services into a single agency, we will make life easier for customers by putting them at the heart of the services they rely on and providing a more coherent approach to service delivery,” they added.

The new organisation was officially launched by Roads Minister Stephen Hammond .

There are weather warnings out again for this weekend and for the end of March and it’s never too late for a sudden drop in temperature and a fall of snow to catch drivers unprepared.

There are a couple of really important things you should do during cold spells to protect your car and also your passengers.

Firstly, your car!

Have your antifreeze and screenwash been topped up lately? Antifreeze SHOULD last for years in your car, but it’s wise to check annually and don’t forget to put the correct concentration of screenwash in the car to combat all the salt and spray on the roads.

BATTERY

Is your battery fully charged? Again we can test this and we recommend that if you are not driving long distances to keep your battery charged up, perhaps consider investing in an “intelligent” battery charger.

Have you got warm clothing in the car in case you are delayed? Take a warm coat, gloves and boots just in case you have to get out of the car or are again stuck in traffic. It was only a short while ago that scores of car owners were stuck in their vehicles overnight due to snow!

Always carry a fully-charged mobile, a pair of wellingtons and take some old bits of carpet and a shovel to clear snow, in case you get stuck.

Finding a reputable car garage is easier than you may think...

It’s natural to feel nervous when booking your car into an auto repair workshop, especially if you’ve never used the firm before. Most of us like to rely on recommendations from friends and family when we choose a garage but there’s always a niggling fear that the work carried out will be much more expensive than we’d imagined or worse – that a mechanic will perform unnecessary repairs to increase your final bill.

Most car owners are unable to repair their own vehicles when they go wrong and have to turn to the professionals for help. Unfortunately, their experiences are not always positive and a growing number of car repair firms are giving the industry a bad name. Last year alone, there were more than 15,000 complaints to Consumer Direct (now the Citizen Advice Bureau ) about car repairs and servicing. But there are ways to protect yourself from being ripped off and ensuring the mechanic who services your car has your best interests at heart. Car owners who arm themselves with knowledge prior to seeking repairs will be in a better position to understand pricing and realise when they are being hoodwinked.

Firstly, it is always a good idea to run a search of your vehicle’s symptoms on the internet so that you can get a measure of possible faults and the likely cost of repairs.

Unless you’ve used a garage many times before and trust the firm implicitly, it is a good idea to gather a range of quotes when looking for repairs – especially if the work to be carried out is large-scale. Repair prices can vary significantly from one firm to another as can labour charges and it is important to receive confirmation that the bill includes VAT otherwise you will face a nasty surprise when you come to settle the balance. Customers are advised to seek a total job price rather than an hourly rate to ensure the repairs do not run over budget but this is not always possible with complicated repairs. In this case, it’s wise to set a cut-off point so you’re not left with a bill you can’t afford.

Many car repair firms offer a free diagnostic service so you should know exactly what the problem is and the likely cost before you give the go-ahead for the work to be completed. However, motorists should be discouraged from taking advantage of this perk if they don’t intend to use the garage for the repairs as some will charge for the time taken to find out what’s wrong with your vehicle.

It’s always advisable to inform a mechanic that you want to be consulted about any other faults they identify during the examination before they go ahead and fix them so you remain in control.

Should there be a trailer MOT?

Do you think there should be an MOT test for trailer use?

As someone who enjoys studying the motoring small ads, this one, from preloved.co.uk, caught my eye: “Ideal for camping or the odd tip run. I’ll be honest, needs slight tidying but not that bad. Has no light board hence £50. Tows lovely. Contact Wayne.”

On the M4 recently, I passed a forlorn figure standing next to his car and trailer. The cause of his dismay was obvious. His trailer had collapsed, its body resting on the road.

That could have been me. At the end of every journey, I always felt a sense of relief that my trailer had withstood the rigours of the journey.

Owners’ amateur efforts to rebuild trailers would not be permitted in countries such as Sweden, where all trailers need to be registered and have a certificate of conformity from the manufacturer. Most significantly, they need to pass a regular roadworthiness test.

Is this necessary in the UK? It might well be, given the startling results in Sweden, where the number of trailers failing the test has increased over the past 10 years. Cecilia Blom Hesselgren of Bilprovningen, the vehicle testing authority, stresses: “There is definitely a need for periodic testing. We tested 236,876 light trailers (up to 3.5 tons) in 2010. Sixty-two per cent passed the test. Of the 38 per cent that failed, 24 per cent had severe defects, the most common in the braking system.”
